The banks were betting
on derivatives and when
everything collapsed

our taxes paid to
bail them out without any
oversight what they

would do with all those
billions we gave them while the
foreclosures whirled on

spinning the country
around like a basketball
on some dude’s finger

can it possibly
be that history will re-
peat itself? Really?

Alicia Ostriker is the author of sixteen volumes of poetry, most recently Waiting for the Light.
