Maria Judite de Carvalho (1921-1998) is widely considered to be one of Portugal’s most important writers of the second half of the twentieth century. Her work spans painting, journalism, and fiction, with an unflinching eye for the despair and loneliness of ordinary lives, especially women’s lives, in a country under the thumb of the Salazar regime. She published widely and to great critical acclaim, and won all the major literary awards. Her novella, Empty Wardrobes, was published by Two Lines Press in 2021.
