Associate Editor


The Baffler is seeking an associate editor. Reporting to the managing editor, deputy editor, and editor in chief, the associate editor will conceive, commission, and edit essays and articles for the print magazine and website. The associate editor also participates in all stages of print and web production, including copyediting, proofreading, and occasional fact-checking. The salary range is between $65,000 and $72,500, commensurate with experience and skill.

Responsibilities

Print magazine

  • With other editors, plan themes and ideas for future print issues.
  • Conceive, commission, and edit 2 to 4 pieces per issue.
  • Assist with copyediting pieces and proofreading the typeset manuscript for each issue.
  • Assist the managing editor in manuscript preparation as needed.

Web

  • Conceive, commission, and edit 3 to 5 web pieces per month.
  • Coordinate with the editor in chief, web editor, and deputy editor to determine web coverage.
  • Provide feedback on other editors’ web pieces as needed.
  • Trade off proofreading duty for other editors’ web stories 1 to 2 times per week.

Misc.

  • Assist in fact-checking as needed.
  • Assist the managing editor in maintaining The Baffler’s house style guide.
  • Draft and proofread social copy for web pieces they’ve edited; review social copy for print pieces they’ve edited.
  • Edit and proofread newsletters as needed.
  • Assist in proofreading marketing, fundraising, and subscription copy as needed.

Requirements

  • 3 to 6 years working as an editor. Experience editing political and/or cultural criticism preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for The Baffler and knowledge of the magazine’s style and concerns.
  • Demonstrated experience working well on a team, completing tasks under tight deadlines, problem-solving, and working effectively with writers on difficult topics.

This is a full-time position based in New York City, with the option to work from home as needed. The Baffler’s benefits include full health and dental insurance coverage with zero in-network deductible, complete employee premium coverage, and partial partner premium coverage paid for by The Baffler; a health reimbursement account of $2,700; fifteen days of paid time off; and 401k with a 3% employer contribution and up to an additional 2% employer match.
