the men have brought escape

“Time forms landscapes of nothing . . .”—Homero Aridjis

the men have brought escape they train us to plant seeds in the darkest
parts of the forest where Leader never trespasses Leader calls this action
reverence in the darkest parts of the forest the men rename Leader’s
reverence fear the men have brought escape and trained us to cultivate
the seeds until they flower flush pink hooded purples clusters of white bright
green plants with devil red nibs deathly black on the end bright green
leaves with even greener apples weighing the branches down the men have
brought escape and call it insurance they have brought escape and call
it exit strategy we plant their seeds and nurture their crops bring them the
one flower droopy white and thickly swollen and green at the end a flower
shaped like a sad angel’s trumpet we bring this escape to them and lay
the white flowers on their mouth watch them suckle and escape for now
in time they return and escape again
