Daily Bafflements

• Leah Hunt-Hendrix is here with a lesson in “effective philanthropism,” which doesn’t sound so different from the “venture philanthropy” skewered by Rhonda Lieberman in Baffler No. 24.

• The “Startup Castle” in Woodside, CA, is seeking new residents to join its current techie inhabitants. If you have a STEM degree, fewer than two tattoos, exercise more than fifteen hours per week, have never attended more than one protest, and have never been prescribed more than one psychiatric drug, you may be eligible to pay $1,000 per month for a bunk in the fashionable but discriminatory incubator.

• Silicon Valley recently held its first fashion week, complete with a pair of flying pants riding a drone down the runway. (In The Baffler’s own first foray into the world of fashion, Eugenia Williamson covers the much more retrograde “mom jeans.”)
