A party for the bemused, the anti-privileged, and the unsmug: that’s you!
This is a retirement party in the grand style, featuring bells and whistles usually employed for gilding the careers of preeminent personages in finance, law, and business. Look for this event to honor our own rock star of book reviewing, our bleeding heart of hearts, our laureate of the abyss, with:
• Live speakers Noam Chomsky, Barbara Ehrenreich, Thomas Frank, Rick Perlstein, and Nikil Saval on the resilience of independent thinking and writing in the age of Trumpism.
• A tribute film, with cameo appearances both sweet and ironic by Sven Birkerts, Keith Gessen, Vivian Gornick, David Graeber, Russell Jacoby, Bill McKibben, Corey Robin, Norman Rush, and other friends and admirers.
• A reading of the Cambridge City Council resolution designating September 10 as George Scialabba Day.
• A performance by the Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band. Who knows, you may wind up boogying down Brattle Street with Noam Chomsky and Barbara Ehrenreich.
If you pay a little bit more than usual, you are guaranteed an unobstructed seat in the theatre; if you pay a little more, you get a tote bag. And if you pay a lot more, you can join George, The Baffler editorial staff, and the speakers who have come to salute him at a reception beforehand or a dinner afterward.
If you cannot attend, please consider supporting the cause of Scialabba by making a donation to his favorite charity, The Baffler Foundation.
