• Happy Reformation Day! On this day in 1517, Martin Luther—once an overachieving Catholic monk—nailed his Ninety-five Theses to the door of a church in Wittenberg. You could, as the Economist has, say he was the first person to truly go “viral.” You could say he was a “media pioneer.” You could even go so far as to say he gave birth to the tweetstorm. So, as the kids say, #ThanksLuther.

• Over at the Guardian, Baffler founder Tom Frank examines the deeper meaning of the Podesta emails. “The WikiLeaks releases furnish us with an opportunity to observe the upper reaches of the American status hierarchy in all its righteousness and majesty,” he explains.

• Back in issue no. 28, Chris Lehmann asked, “What are billionaires for?” The answer, it turns out, is self-aggrandizing acts of charity. But who knew that it could, as hedge funder Pete Muller has shown us, come in the form of a song about dating?
