Daily Bafflements

• In Georgia, a sanitation worker got sentenced to thirty days in jail when residents of a wealthy neighborhood complained that he was picking up their garbage too early in the morning and waking them up, reports the Christian Science Monitor (emphasis on their garbage). Later, the town’s solicitor conceded that “In retrospect, the actions of the court with regards to Mr. McGill’s sentence for violating the city’s noise laws, was disproportionate to a first-time offense.” (Via Ron Charles and Yvonne Zip.)

• Givenchy and Stella McCartney: They’re just like us! They’re “Rebelling Against the Tyranny of the New.”

• Today in Bespoke: Women!

• Speaking of which, did you notice our new duds? Our first-ever fashion-themed issue, “Venus in Furs,” debuts on the site today. We’re rolling it out little by little over the next few weeks, but today we’ve got an essay on the class implications of Normcore, a meta-review of the latest fashion books, and a feminist manifesto that will knock your socks off. Read John Summers’s introduction to the issue here. And if you are in New York City next Wednesday and are so inclined, the authors of those pieces will all be in attendance at the issue launch party (buy tickets here).
